Basic Education / GED Volunteer

YouthLEAD provides eligible youth with useful and necessary skill training and/or basic education and employment opportunities. The specific goal is to prepare youth for employment or post-secondary education following completion of a high school education or, for older youth, help them begin and maintain progress on a satisfying career track.  (Description from Ramsey County Website: http://www.co.ramsey.mn.us/workforce/Youth.htm)

Volunteer responsibilities will consist of:

  • Working one-on-one or in small groups with youth assisting them with GED preparation, basic educational skills in reading and math.
  • Help prepare youth to take the accuplacer or other entrance exams for post-secondary education.

Requirements:

  • Work with YouthLEAD Counselor to set up sessions based on availability of tutor and youth. Be available for 2 to 4 hours per week.
  • Establish clear objectives for all lessons, units, and projects and communicate those objectives to participants.
  • Instruct participants individually and in groups, using various teaching methods such as lectures, discussions, and demonstrations.
  • Prepare materials and classrooms for individualized or class activities. Tutor and participants have access to a computer lab if desired.
  • Previous experience tutoring or teaching is preferred
  • Students pursuing teaching degrees in the field of Adult Basic Education, General Education Development or related subject matter are encouraged to apply.
